Here Be Monsters is the 1st mission in Act 5 of the single player campaign.

You play as Emeric and Koji facing off against Sedge once again hunting down Mercia's group. While Emeric goes to seek the aid of nearby emberwing dragons, Koji stays behind to defend against Sedge's attack and buy Emeric time.

This mission functions as a tutorial for Dragons and Balloons, and introduces Koji's groove.

Objective[edit]

Victory: Defeat Sedge

Defeat: Koji or Emeric is defeated, or the Stronghold is destroyed.

Map[edit]

Here Be Monsters map

When Emeric Captures the Tower at the South edge of the map, he automatically receives 3 dragons surrounding the tower.

Both the West and East sides of the map are entirely seperated from the ground. This means no ground reinforcements can reach Emeric, and Emeric can only get to the West side of the map using a Balloon.

Enemy reinforcements will arrive each turn from the North-West corner of the map for the first 6 turns, including Sedge on turn 5. These are listed below:

  • Turn 1: 2 Spearman, 1 Cavalry
  • Turn 2: 1 Archer, 1 Aeronaut
  • Turn 3: 2 Spearman, 1 Mage
  • Turn 4: 1 Mage, 1 Aeronaut
  • Turn 5: 2 Soldiers, 2 Archers, 1 Giant, and Sedge
  • Turn 6: 2 Trebuchet, 2 Giants, 2 Aeronauts, 1 Sky Rider

There are no reinforcements for the East side of the map.

Story[edit]

20th July, Glittering Mines

As Mercia and her group, with their new companion, Prince Koji, make their way to the Heavensong ports. Koji and Emeric pause for a bit to talk. Koji once more apologises for having fought with Emeric, but is consoled by Emeric's happiness to have sparred with the young prince. However, they are interrupted by Sedge, once more aiming to kill. With Gloom Giants at his disposal, the group cannot face Sedge. Emeric makes a plan to commune with the nearby dragons of the mountains, and Koji stays behind to hold off until the dragons can come to their aid.

Having defeated Sedge with the dragons' support, he flees again, promising he will kill them eventually.

Strategy[edit]

This is one of the harder mandatory missions in Wargroove's campaign. It will be decided by what units you decide to employ, and how you use them.

When using Emeric, always make sure to capture any village you can while advancing. The one extra turn it takes to reach the tower is negligible, if it even exists, and the income is welcome. You want to reach the tower as soon as you can, following the road for maximum efficiency. Capturing these villages also holds up the Gloom Giants, as they'll lag behind you to break them. As soon as the dragons are up and running, send one flying straight toward where Koji is holding down the fort, and burn down the Giants with the other two. Emeric can dispatch of the other units on his side extremely easily, so immediately afterward fly them back.

Koji's side, in contrast, is much more difficult. There are a number of units that are extremely valuable to deploy, and it's hard to choose, so firstly mind the ones you have. Koji should hold down a bridge - preferably the left one, as it offers plenty of trees for him to hide in should the situation get dire. His Sparrow Bombs deal 50% of his total damage to enemies, and act in a 3x3 range, which is extremely helpful. Even better, these can hit enemy Leafwings. A great way to use them is to reduce enemy health, but not to kill them; allow them to suicide charge Koji, thus charging his Groove Meter much faster. Then, dance your Tigerlance just outside the enemy Ballista's range. Its only job is to neuter the siege weapon, and although it certainly is valuable beyond that, it's unlikely to have a real impact and will likely be defeated quickly. Capturing villages beyond the bridges is a fool's errand due to the high number of enemy troops, so don't even bother; spend your resources fortifying the river.

Thunderbears are a necessity sooner rather than later, as the amount of flying units Sedge spawns is extremely high. His Swooper, especially, is a massive issue. If left alive, it will render your first Emberwing useless, which will more than likely ruin the game for you. Make sure it is either taken care of, or that you're able to kill it before it can kill your Emberwing. The other flying units, while troublesome, are nothing compared to the Swooper's game-deciding threat.

More Tigerlances are very welcome. Enemy Shooters and Shamans will prove a great issue for Koji, as they can either deal high damage or force him to move into open areas to evade them. A Tigerlance's mobility and strength is a great check against the two, often destroying Shamans in a single turn.

Ballistas are spectacular checks against the enemy fliers. They can be positioned just behind the river, which means that they will most likely be left alone (as enemies will aim for Koji), and will be in range to attack the enemy Leafwings drawn in by the fighting.

Trebuchets are useful for dealing with the Gloom Giants, but should everything go well, your Emberwing will arrive soon enough to wipe them off the map (or at least damage them severely). It's important to remember that Gloom Giants deal critical damage (250%) when at 40% health or below, so don't let your guard down.

Wagons are somewhat useful for transporting troops. They can make Heronguards a great defense on the right bridge, but with the upcoming update increasing the Heronguard's price, it might be too costly to carry this strategy out then. Beyond that, they can deliver Thunderbears to the frontlines swiftly, although the Thunderbear's 5 movement is good enough to get there quickly without issue.

As soon as your second and third dragon arrive, the battle is all but won. Don't overextend Koji and you should be fine at this part. If Sedge stands on a road, he can easily be critted and swiftly destroyed by the Emberwings. Otherwise, they can still deal heavy damage, and if you notice you're already winning, purchasing a ballista or two can help clear out the last enemies and defeat Sedge a turn or two earlier.

Mr. Emeric-- I mean...

Lord Emeric... Can I speak to you for just a moment?

Of course, Your Highness.

I just wanted to say...

I'm really sorry for fighting you. I messed up.

Please don't trouble yourself about it, young prince.

It was good to spar with a member of the Heavensong imperial family once more.

And if I may say... you're an impressive fighter!

Haha! Thank you!

Now, we really should catch up with--

(Enter Sedge)

You thought you could just ssslip away...

But no one essscapes from Sedge...

Y-You're Sedge?!

You shouldn't be here! You're not allowed in Heavensong!

Greenfinger can't ssstop Sedge any more.

(Enter Gloom Giants)

Emeric! He has giants with him, what do we do?!

Koji, I need you to hold off Sedge.

There are dragons in these mountains who could aid us. I'm going to seek them out.

But I-- Yes, sir.

Truly, you are your mother's son.

(Exit Emeric)

Introduction Dialogue

Koji, I'm counting on you to hold off Sedge and his troops.

No problem, Lord Emeric! I won't let you down!

In the meantime, I'll make my way south towards the Dragons.

With their assistance, we should easily be able to take on Sedge's Giants.

Shadows fade, Sedge.

(Exit Sedge)

Trivia[edit]

  • Despite the dialogue saying Balloons can carry ground units of "any size" this is no longer true. Balloons can only carry footsoldiers and dogs, similar to a Wagon.
  • One of the events on the stage is stored as "Dragons kills giant" and triggers dialogue referencing "that Gloom Giant didn't stand a chance". However, it will trigger regardless of the unit type killed.
  • While this is the first time the player has had access to Dragons, this is the fourth time Dragons have been in a mission. The other three include High Vampire of the West, The Dashing General, and Prince of the Empire. This is similar to Giant and Aeronaut.
  • This is the only time Balloons are introduced to the player, but its tutorial is entirely optional. Enemy commanders never purchase balloons, and there is no requirement to recruit one in this mission.
