Puppy in the Middle is the 1st side mission in Act 3 of the single player campaign.

You play as Caesar defending villagers from an invasion by Outlaws.

Objective[edit]

Victory: Defeat all waves of enemies.

Defeat: Caesar or any Villager is defeated, or the Stronghold is destroyed.

Puppy in the Middle map

The player begins with 2 Mages, and 4 Villagers surrounding a Stronghold. If any of the Villagers or the Stronghold falls, the mission is lost, however the Villagers can be moved to delay the enemy from defeating one.

The map is loosely split into 3 main sections, with Caesar's base at the centre. Enemy reinforcements will continually arrive on every enemy turn, until and including Turn 15.

There is an Angel Statue located at the far North-East of the map, in a small forest.

Story[edit]

19th June, Rambler's Ruin

Mercia and company travel across the Lost Leagues, Caesar once again finds villagers being attacked by the Outlaws he met in the Gloomwoods. Having upset their efforts once more, they call in reinforcements to attack the local settlement, so Caesar stays to protect the villagers.

Having lost once more, the Outlaws run away. The villagers thank Caesar, before Emeric arrives to find Caesar for dinner time. Caesar returns to the group, happy to have helped more people.

Outlaw 1: You wouldn't think bein' a villager would demand such high overheads...

Outlaw 2: I'd imagine it's more of an income flow issue.

Outlaw 3: Well o'course in these rural communities...

Outlaw 3: ...income is inevitably dictated by unreliable agrarian yields.

Villager: Um...

Outlaw 1: Lads, we're becoming sidetracked here!

Outlaw 1: Look 'ere villager, if you've no gold, then yer life's forfeit.

Grrr! Bark!

Outlaw 1: Keep yer snout out of this, doggy. It's none of yer business.

Bark! Bark!

Outlaw 1: Alright fleabag, that was the last of my patience.

For its small size, this is a pretty well-connected settlement.

Must make it an appealing target for Outlaws.

Seems like Commander Caesar's staying put.

Yip.

That settles it! We'll stay here and protect these Villagers and their settlement!
