Template:Sandbox/doc

The Sandbox template is a dedicated template page for sandboxing behaviours of edits to templates. Usually when editing a template, no changes can be previewed, only observed after edit, this can lead to risks of breaking templates or large portions of the wiki when adding basic features. This Sandbox provides a safe way to ensure your template edits will work!

Use process

Step 1: Copy Template

Copy the template you wish to modify into the Sandbox.

Step 2: Edit Sandbox Template

Perform any modifcations on the Sandboxed version of the template. Feel free to save changes with no reasons given, so long as you're using this appropriately and never placing the Sandbox on anything else, it will not matter.

Step 3: 'Run' the Template

Perform a test of the template, by placing your test onto the page output of the Sandbox using the below content:

<noinclude> Your template test here </noinclude>

Alternatively, you may use your user page as an area to perform more extensive adjustments for rapid previewing.

Step 4: Save changes and tidy up

Copy your new version of the template into the original, and commit as an edit to the template. If all has gone well, you will have prevented any changes that might damage the template's operation.

if you did choose to use the <noinclude> tags for testing, make sure you're reverting this page to our standard template ending:

Additionally, if you tested this elsewhere (e.g. on a user page) please make sure to tidy up any broken links or automatically placed categories, as this will interfere with the wiki.
