The Beginning is the introduction mission at the start of the single player campaign.
You play as Sigrid, infiltrating Cherrystone Castle to assassinate King Mercival of Cherrystone.
This mission functions as a tutorial for the basic controls of the game.
Objective[edit]
Victory: Sigrid reaches the chamber King Mercival is in.
Defeat: Sigrid reveals her location by making too much noise. This happens by attacking any of the gates leading to other soldiers more than once.

Unlocks[edit]
- Pages 4 and 5 for Emeric's bio in the codex.
- Access to Act 1: Mission 1, The Breach.
Map[edit]
Most of the map is for show. The functional area contains 4 enemy soldiers at 10% health and 7 gates (which cannot be broken due to the map conditions). Attacking gates on the map more than once will result in an automatic Defeat.
Unlike most campaign maps, the weather is Always Severe (Raining), though this has no gameplay impact for this mission.
Story[edit]
15th March, Cherrystone Castle.
Sigrid, the High Vampire of Felheim, sneaks into Cherrystone Castle to assasinate King Mercival. She kills any soldiers in her path, to reach the room Mercival is in.
At the end of the mission, Sigrid kills Mercival, triggering a war between Cherrystone and Felheim, a duty which now rests upon Mercival's daughter, Mercia, who becomes the new queen of Cherrystone. But, it is still unknown why Sigrid killed Mercival. What is this 'key' she is looking for? Whatever it is, Mercival ensured its safety before he died.

Simple strategy |
---|
Hint: Move towards Mercival without delay. Achieving an S rank is simple. Follow the tutorial's directions for most of the mission, and then move towards the king at the top of the map. Let the enemies come to you: they won't damage you at all. |
Dialogue[edit]
- One rainy night at Cherrystone Castle...
Swordsman 1: This weather is giving me the spooks.
Swordsman 1: Did you hear that?!
Swordsman 2: Cut it out! It's just thunder.
Swordsman 2: But I'm, er... going to patrol the throne room.
- (Exit Swordsman 2)
Swordsman 1: Hey, wait for me!
- (Exit Swordsman 1)
- (Enter Sigrid)
Introduction dialogue
Getting to the king shouldn't be much of a challenge.
There he is, all alone in his chambers. How convenient.
The fewer guards I dispatch, the quicker this will be...
...but some unfortunate wretches still stand in my way.
I'll start by defeating that one over there.
[Sigrid's Turn 1] If selecting something except attacking the guard
I need to defeat that guard and clear a path to the King.
Start of Mercival's turn 1
It's time... Time my daughter learned the truth. But how do I tell her?
Start of Sigrid's turn 2
I'll make my way towards the King's chambers.
[Sigrid's Turn 2] If selecting something except moving to the marked location
I need to move further into the castle.
Start of Mercival's turn 2
'Mercia, a long time ago, before Cherrystone was Cherrystone...' Hmm... No...
Start of Sigrd's turn 3
Start of Mercival's turn 3
'There was once a Kingdom called Cacophony, and a war known as The Great Dissonance...'
Start of Mercival's turn 4
This knowledge is too great a burden! Oh, Mercia...
Start of Mercival's turn 5
I'll start slowly... 'My darling Bluebird, I need to tell you something...'
Start of Mercival's turn 6
'It's a very long story about something that happened a very long time ago.'
Start of Mercival's turn 7
A very long time ago indeed... Why can't the past stay the past?
Start of Mercival's turn 8
It is unfair that we remain responsible for a centuries-old mistake that was not our own.
Start of Mercival's turn 9
Unfair and inescapable... How am I going to tell her...?
Start of Mercival's turn 10 and onwards
Attacking a gate for the first time
- (Cutscene starts)
Swordsman: Did you hear that?!
Alchemist: Calm yourself, it's just the storm.
Swordsman: I don't know... I could hard sworn that sound came from inside the castle.
- (Cutscene closes)
Humans are so numerous... Like rodents...
It isn't worth the time and effort it would take to kill them all...
I should stick to the hallways and avoid the tiresome swarm.
Attacking a gate for the second time
- (Cutscene starts)
Swordsman: See! I told you I heard something!
Alchemist: Surrender, intruder, or we'll be forced to make you!
- (Enter 4 more guards)
Open entering the Northern corridor
If I access the Overview Screen, I can get a glimpse of it's true extent...
I just need to select an unoccupied tile and pick 'Overview'.
- (Open Overview)
This screen provides me with objectives and statistics.
Hmph... So many humans. How unpleasant. Still, I can avoid most of them.
As my objective says, I'm here for the King.
I can close this now and return to my task.
- (Close Overview)
Time to defeat a few more hapless guards and make my way to the King's chamber...
Upon entering Mercival's chamber
- (Sigrid attacks Mercival)
Do you understand what you've just done? You'll start a war!
War? The inane squabble of children.
You'll never have it. The Key is in safe hands, far from the grasp of a monster like you!
'Safe hands'...? Before you die, understand this: nothing is safe from me.
- (Sigrid kills Mercival)
Still the Key eludes me... No matter.
- (Exit Sigrid)
Well done, Princess. Your skill with the Cherryblade improves yet further.
- (Enter Soldier)
It's alright, Caesar, it's just one of the royal guard.
Is this important? You disturb the Princess's lessons.
Swordsman: The king, My Lord! The king has been killed!
Swordsman: Sir, the assailant appears to have been a v-v-vampire.
Princess Mercia, the murder of your father is an act of war. We must defend the kingdom.
